Assessing the potential for a rare disease drug in a small country

Problem context

Our client has a product for a rare genetic disorder. While the product is well established in many mature markets, the client was keen to explore opportunities in new territories. In this particular instance, they had received information that patients may exist in a certain geographical territory where the organisation currently had no presence. Insight Dojo were brought on board to develop an understanding of the existence and management of the disease in this territory and provide advice on entering the region.

Our approach

Given the lack of knowledge and available information around the disease in the territory, we knew desk research alone would not be sufficient to solve this problem. Therefore, a qualitative ‘bricolage’ design approach was adopted. Our list of potential contacts spanned doctors working in the specific area, university professors, nurses, and those working in ‘adjacent’ health care professions such as dentistry. From this list, we identified the most knowledgeable people and interviewed them.

We identified the exact number of patients suffering from the disease and profiled them in depth. We also identified the patient treatment pathway and identified the most appropriate ways to communicate with relevant physicians in the area. These insights have equipped the client with the knowledge required to enter the region.
